Rubber Compounds and Elastomers
General Information
Natural Rubber - NR
A general purpose rubber with the optimum balance of physical properties essential for high performance engineering applications. It has a long fatigue life and high strength even without reinforcing fillers and is the first choice for spring applications. It can be compounded to give a wide range of hardness. Good low temperature flexibility, excellent elasticity with strong ensile and good elongation. Its chief disadvantage is its poor oil resistance and its lack of resistance to oxygen and ozone.
General uses: Industrial products, rubber tubes, rubber belts.
Isoprene Rubber - IR
Very similar properties to natural rubber as IR is a synthetic natural rubber.
General uses: Industrial products, Medical, rubber tube, rubber belts.
Styrene Butadiene Rubber - SBR
A general purpose synthetic rubber, it must be compounded with reinforcing fillers for high strength and then has physical and chemical properties similar to natural rubber. SBR's abrasion resistance is better than natural rubber. Good elasticity, good low temperature properties but poorer fatigue resistance.
General uses: Industrial products rubber tube, rubber belts.
Butadiene Rubber - BR
Low hysteresis, good temperature flexibility and high abrasion resistance under severe weather conditions. It is used in blends with SBR and natural rubber. Has poor processing properties and poor tear properties.
General uses: Industrial products, toys/balls, tires.
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer - EDPM
Excellent for water and steam applications. Similar to SBR but improved resistance to atmospheric ageing, heat oxidization and ozone. Excellent electrical properties and good chemical resistance.
General uses: Automotive, Industrial products, Building products.
Butyl Rubber - BUTYI
This rubber has a very high impermeability to gases and is used for the inner tubes of pneumatic and in vacuum and high pressure applications. Good ozone, weathering, heat and chemical resistance. Low resilience at ambient temperatures and is suitable for damping applications.
General uses: Rubber bladder, inner tubes, electrical accessories.
Chloroprene Rubber - CR
Several types of polychloroprene. Mechanical properties generally inferior to natural rubber but superior chemical properties. Over time crystallization results in hardening at temperatures about -10 degree C. Very good resistance to ozone. Good flame retardance and good tackiness.
General uses: Industrial products.
Nitrile Rubber - NBR
Nitrile rubbers are copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile. The oil resistance increases as the acrylonitrile content but at the expense of resilience. Has good oil and liquid fuel resistant and good gas barrier properties.
General uses: O-rings, oil seals, water-proof gaskets, rubber rollers, industrial products.
Polyurethane Rubber - PU
Good impact, abrasion, heat and chemical resistance with strong tensile strength.
General uses: O-rings, gaskets, abrasion-resistant bearing set, sports accessories.
Polyacrylate Rubber - ACM
Good resistance at normal and elevated temperatures to oil and oxygen. Excellent ozone and weathering resistance.
General uses: O-rings, gaskets, seals.
Fluorocarbon Rubber - FKM
High temperature resistance. Good oil resistance, chemical products resistance and flame resistance. Low temperature properties and elasticity are poor.
General uses: O-rings, gaskets, oil seal, rubber seals.
Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene Rubber - CSM
Good heat, weather and ozone resistance with low gas permeability. Used often for protective coatings.
General Uses: Container of oxidizing-resistant medicines, industrial products.
Epichlorhydrin Rubber - ECO
Good oil, low temperature resistance. Good resistance to hydrocarbon solvents combined with moderate low temperature flexibility, poor abrasion resistance and electrical properties.
General Uses: O-rings, seals, rubber glues.
Fluoro-silicone Rubber - FVMQ
Good high and low temperature resistance. Good oil, solvent and petrol resistance.
General uses: O-rings, gaskets, seals.
